Overview
The Istania are a mortal lineage born from catastrophe rather than natural evolution. Their ancestors were caught in the first wave of raw choral magic released when the Kindred Three pierced the veil, warping bodies and infusing elemental resonance into flesh and bone. Over generations, interbreeding with other blood stabilized their forms into a striking, humanoid race.
Istania are distinguished by crystalline horns, refractive eyes, and "Echo marks" which are gem-like growths along their head, spine, and tail that channel elemental affinities. Every Istania is bound to a specific crystal or gemstone, shaping both appearance and innate magical talent. Though mortal, they carry the echo of the Shattering in their bodies: a reminder of their origins and the potent, dangerous forces that forged them.

Istania stand between 135–205 cm at maturity, with most falling between 157–182 cm. Weight is proportional to height, often muscular due to subtle crystallization of bones. Horns and tails vary in shape and texture, while Echo marks manifest as crystalline or geode-like structures across the body. Skin tones range from human-like hues to vivid, unnatural shades, often accented with unique markings; eyes are prismatic, sometimes fractal, with sclera in black, white, or other uncommon colors.
They reach adulthood at around 21 years and may live up to 110 years. All Istania possess elemental affinities tied to their crystal resonance, influencing both appearance and abilities. Diet is omnivorous but leans toward meat, with preferences sometimes shaped by elemental alignment. Culturally, they favor caution around magic, often pursuing martial or suppressive disciplines, though individual practices vary widely.
History
Almost every race of Nimoria traces its origins to natural evolution, but Istania are among the few exceptions. Their beginnings lie in catastrophe.
Long ago, The Kindred Three sought to pierce the veil and create a bridge between the material plane and what lies beyond, following visions shown to them by a greater being. Against all reason, they succeeded, however what they found was not what they sought. There was no glorious rain of grace, instead the rift they opened poured forth raw, chaotic magic, destroying the Last Echdrassil, obliterating everything within its immediate vicinity, and unleashing the first wave of pure choral magic throughout the world.
Those who stood just beyond the blast were not spared. Instead of death, they were remade. Their bodies warped by the fallout of unbridled arcane energy. Horns sprouted where none had been before. Their sclera blackened, their flesh shifted to unnatural hues, and fragments of the Aria wove themselves into their very being. These survivors were no longer what they had been, but something entirely different; marked, changed, and forever "touched."
Over generations, these altered peoples mingled with one another and with the races around them. Human blood proved dominant, shaping the scattered forms of the touched into a more consistent, humanoid lineage. Yet the arcane scars of their genesis endured. From this mingling of magic and mortality, the Istania were born.
Physiology
The Istania are a race easily set apart by their crystalline features and elemental affinities. While their proportions mirror those of humans, their forms are more striking and varied. They typically stand between 157cm and 182cm, though interbreeding has created a wide range, with extremes spanning from 135 cm to 205 cm. Their weight is proportional to their height, often leaning toward muscular builds due to bones subtly altered by crystallization. Istania mature at about 21 years of age and, though only slightly longer-lived than humans, may reach up to 110 years.
Echo Marks
Their most distinctive traits are their crystalline "pontil marks," or more commonly referred to as Echo marks, which are formations that manifest along the head and lower back, extending into a tail. These structures are remnants of the primal arcane surge that birthed their kind, channeling energy through the body in intricate patterns across the face, neck, and spine. Echo marks most often resemble precious or semi-precious gemstones, spiking outward in varied shapes. While prominent at the horns and tail, smaller growths may also appear at the shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, hands, and feet. Sometimes even forming geode-like cavities in the ribcage. . .
"Echo marks, faded though not forgotten, each Therianid and Istania have these on their napes and cheeks... Some believe they're kissmarks left by the Flux Incarnate upon these souls as a sign of their undying love... Even though they've long since vanished since the First Shattering..."
Horns & Tails
Horns themselves are always present, rooted in keratin near the skull and fracturing into crystalline tips of unpredictable form. Tails vary just as widely, their tips ending in; spikes, spades, tufts of hair, or sharp crystalline shards. Their leathery surfaces typically match the Istania's skin palette.
Coloration & Features
Skin tones are extraordinarily diverse, ranging from human-like hues to vivid colors across the spectrum, sometimes streaked with unique markings akin to their alchemical sigils. Their eyes are glass-like and prismatic, refracting light as if cut from crystal. Some display multiple fractal irises within a single sclera, which is most often black or white. Ears may appear pointed from crystalline clusters at their tips, though some Istania bear rounded ears instead. Subtler traits such as sharpened canines, faint patterns along the skin, or uncommon scleral colors, further distinguish them.
Elemental Affinities
Every Istania is born with an affinity to a specific crystal or gemstone, which shapes not only their horns but also their elemental inclinations. A citrine or ruby-marked Istania may show a talent for fire, while those bound to opal or aquamarine lean toward water. Amethyst and lapis lazuli are tied to air, while agate and malachite resonate with earth. These affinities ripple through their bodies, often influencing physical traits: fire-aligned Istania may carry flickers of ember in their hair, while water-aligned individuals might have horns that shimmer with condensation or even drip with seawater. In rarer cases, some Istania embody moonlight or shadow, their forms exuding an otherworldly beauty.
Though each is unique, the Istania are unmistakable. Horns of stone and crystal, refractive eyes, striking skin tones, and the glittering pontil marks of their genesis ensure they stand out in any crowd as living embodiments of magic crystallized into flesh.
Society

Because of their unusual origins, the Istania have never possessed a singular social structure. They emerged from many different races, and so their societies reflect a wide variety of traditions and practices. The one thread that bound them together, however, was a deep-rooted fear of magic. Every Istania understands the dangers it could bring, and this collective caution pushed them toward martial disciplines and into communities where magic was less prominent.
Over time, as arcane knowledge became better understood, this fear gradually shifted into more of a cultural phobia. One that diminished with each passing generation. Even so, many Istania continued to distance themselves from magical centers of power, determined to avoid repeating the catastrophe of the Shattering. Others chose the opposite path, studying nullification magic fueled by the Hush, designed to counter and suppress arcane practices. Perhaps to ensure that no force could ever again wield such destructive control over their kind again.
Diet
Istanians are omnivores, but their diets lean heavily toward meat. In their earliest generations, many of the ancestries altered by the Shattering had strong carnivorous tendencies. As these traits persisted through interbreeding, Istanians gradually developed sharper teeth and more pronounced canines. Even today, this adaptation makes the consumption of meat easier and more instinctive, shaping their preference for carnivorous diets.
That said, Istanians are fully capable of eating plant-based foods, and their digestive systems handle a wide range of vegetation, grains, and fruits with little difficulty. Many communities supplement their meals with herbs, roots, and seasonal crops, especially in regions where hunting is scarce or game is considered sacred. In cosmopolitan areas, Istanians may cultivate a reputation for enjoying spiced meats or exotic preparations, seasoning their food in ways that mirror their elemental affinities; embers of fire, cooling brines of water, fragrant mineral salts of earth, or light, airy infusions of wind.
For some, diet is more than sustenance; it is symbolic. Istanians whose crystalline affinities align with particular elements sometimes lean into foods that resonate with those traits. A fire-touched Istania might prefer smoked or roasted meats, while one with water-born traits may favor seafood or stews. Even so, personal preference often outweighs tradition. Across Nimoria, Istanian cuisine is as varied as their people.
