Overview

The Héroska are a Kalmet lineage whose origins lie at the intersection of myth, migration, and endurance. Their own traditions name the Vital Gods Gdarna, of Sea and Storm, and Arbn, of the Winds, as their creators, while nomadic groups of the Southwestern Steppes often revere Madag, the Visionary of Great Beasts, as their guiding progenitor.

Scholarly consensus places their divergence from other Kalmet peoples at roughly 350,000 years ago, coinciding with their arrival upon Nimoria. Whether this branching occurred through natural adaptation or divine intervention remains unresolved. By approximately 130,000 years ago, Héroska populations had stabilized into forms largely consistent with those seen today.

Once widespread across Nimoria, modern Héroska societies represent remnants of a formerly expansive and cosmopolitan presence. The Dalro of the Southern Steppes remain the most populous, maintaining nomadic traditions tied closely to great herd-beasts. Their northern cousins, the Dalar, are fewer in number but culturally diverse, shaped by the absorption of displaced hunter-gatherer groups following long periods of population decline. Coastal Ormad communities reflect yet another adaptation, shaped by maritime environments and trade.

Héroska are imposing in stature, typically standing between 175–220 cm at maturity, with dense bone structures and powerful musculature. Their physiques are supported by robust cardiovascular systems, including larger hearts adapted for sustained exertion. Sexual dimorphism is modest, though tusk size and curvature often serve as secondary markers of age or lineage.

Their most distinctive feature is their tusks, which develop through adolescence and generally cease growth around 18 years of age, though some individuals continue to see gradual growth well into adulthood. While tusks are believed to have been shaped primarily through sexual selection, some scholars suggest earlier functional uses in bark-stripping and plant foraging. This dietary past is echoed in their broad jaws, strong temporal muscles, and pronounced sagittal crests.

Skin tones range across muted earthen hues—deep greens, weathered tans, rich browns, and cool greys—often mottled or unevenly distributed. Scarring is common and fades slowly due to dense dermal layers. Hair is predominantly dark, from black to deep brown, with textures ranging from coarse straight strands to tight curls. Facial hair is common, and greying often appears earlier than in Humans, particularly among those exposed to prolonged hardship.

Eye coloration tends toward dark browns and blacks, with hazel appearing less frequently. Gold eyes are exceptionally rare and often carry spiritual or ancestral significance within Héroska cultures.

Héroska mature at a rate comparable to Humans and possess similar lifespans, typically living 70–80 years under favorable conditions. Their diets are heavily herbivorous, incorporating tough plant matter such as bark, supplemented by dairy and meat from domesticated bison herds. This diet reflects both ancient adaptations and modern pastoral lifeways.

Culturally, Héroska societies vary by region. Steppe groups tend toward matriarchal but non-dynastic structures, emphasizing communal authority over inherited rule. Among the Dalro, it is customary for juvenile males to be sent into exile, forming bachelor groups that may later reintegrate—or persist as independent bands. Many enduring stereotypes of Héroska "outlaws" stem from these voluntary exiles rather than from mainstream herds.

History

Many cultures have tales of their origins, and the Héroska themselves attribute their birth to the Gods (in their tongue), Gdarna and Arbn, Vital deities of the Sea and Winds, as their creators. The more populous, nomadic populations of the Southwestern Steppes tend to favor Madag, the Visionary deity of Great Beasts.

In terms of the geologic timescale, it is believed Héroska first branched off from others of the Kalmet (Human-like) Kind around 350 kya (it is yet undetermined whether this speciation began naturally or by the hand of the divine), coinciding with their arrival on the continent. By roughly 130 kya, they more or resembled modern populations.

Most Héroska groups in the present are mere remnants of what was once a cosmopolitan presence on Nimoria. The Dalro remain the largest of the remaining Héroska groups, and are widespread in the South of Nimoria. Their cousins, the Dalar, are generally smaller in number, but immensely diverse given more recent incorporation of remaining hunter-gatherer groups heading toward the more sedentary Dalar in the wake of recent population decline.

Physiology

One of the more prominent features of the Héroska is their tusks, whose purpose has generally been agreed to have developed to their current extent due to sexual selection, though some speculate this may have gotten its start to assist in the shaving of tree bark for consumption. This earlier, heavier reliance on plant matter is still exhibited today in their robust jaws and temporal muscles and their more prominent sagittal crest for improved muscle attachment.

Their stature is larger on average than humans, ranging from roughly 175 cm to 220 cm. This coincides with more significant bone and muscle density, aided by a larger heart and a more robust cardiovascular system. In addition to their size and musculature, the Héroska display a wide yet consistent range of external physical traits. Skin pigmentation most commonly presents in muted earthen hues, including deep forest greens, weathered tans, rich browns, and cool greys. These tones are often unevenly distributed, with natural mottling, darker patches along the shoulders, spine, and limbs, or subtle gradients that deepen with age and prolonged sun exposure. Scarring is common and tends to fade slowly, often remaining visible for decades due to the density of the dermal layers.

Hair, Eyes & Coloration

Hair color among the Héroska is predominantly dark, with black being the most widespread, followed closely by deep browns. Hair texture varies from coarse and straight to thick, tightly coiled curls, frequently growing heavier along the scalp and nape while thinning across the temples with age. Facial hair is common in many populations and follows similar coloration, though streaks of grey or ash-white often appear earlier than in humans, particularly in individuals exposed to prolonged stress or harsh climates.

Eye coloration is typically dark, ranging from black and deep brown to softer hazel tones. Gold eyes are exceptionally rare and are often regarded with cultural or spiritual significance, sometimes believed to be indicative of ancestral favor or unusual lineage.

Tusks & Longevity

Héroska lifespans roughly the same as humans, living around 70 to 80 years under ideal conditions, but even among the nomadic Dalro these ages are commonly reached. By 18 years of age, Héroska tusks are generally expected to stop growing, but this growth can persist well into adulthood; a holdover from a time when they relied more heavily on them for the acquisition of food.

Society & Regional Groups

This differs between the Dalro (Southern Steppe), Dalar (Northern Steppe), and the Ormad (NW Coast). For as long as has been documented, the Dalro were mixed, with some populations seeing a predominant matriarch and others a predominant patriarch. In this way, some view pre-historic Dalric society as something akin to egalitarian.

However, both Steppe populations exhibit predominantly matriarchal tendencies, though these are rarely dynastic. Some tendencies of their pre-contact familial practices persist, the most obvious being that of sending juvenile males out on their own. Bachelor groups typically form for these exiled males, though most tend to be permitted back into their original Herd upon reaching maturity.

This tactic suits the Dalro well, given that the Madagor, too, exhibits it. So, it is common to see Dalro bachelor groups migrating with Madagor bachelor groups. Interestingly, some male Dalro continue this so-called bachelor lifestyle, sticking with other voluntary exiles. Most stereotypes about Dalro as "Outlaws" stem from these groups. It is one of these groups that has run Xeval for nearly 80 years.

Diet

As mentioned, the Héroska diet is heavily herbivorous and still includes even woodier material, such as plant bark. They also consume a reasonable amount of dairy, facilitated by their domesticated Bison, and supplement their diet further with their meat.
